The Real Housewives of Orange County to Appear on Shear Genius

Talk about a sheer genius idea of cross promotion!

The Real Housewives of Orange County will appear Wednesday on Shear Genius.

In the episode, the housewives and their daughters will be clients in an elimination challenge. Vicki Gunvalson, Jeana Keough, Lauri Waring, Tammy Knickerbocker, Tamra Barney and former housewife Kimberly Bryant are reported to be participants.

“Some of the girls liked their hair, and the other girls were in tears,” said Keough. “They had to go get their hair fixed (afterward). I wanted to be on the show for fun. But it was a major cut job for me. I had to go get extensions (afterward).”

Oh, the horror!

Reality TV Recaps: So You Think You Can Dance, Shear Genius

While one reality TV show narrowed down its remaining semi-finalists, another premiered last night. Let’s recap both…

So You Think You Can Dance: Our guest judge this week is Adam Shankman, who directed Hairspray and dropped by a couple times last season. Adam has just finished shooting Bedtime Stories with Adam Sandler, and tells us that Lacey Schwimmer and Travis Wall are in it… — Reality News Online

Shear Genius: So the first short cut challenge (get it?) is to cut their clients’ hair blindfolded. The clients, bless them, are all wearing safety glasses — and it seems that all of them make it through without being cut… — Zap2It

Vidal Sasoon to Guest Judge on Shear Genius Season Finale

A hair styling icon, Vidal Sasson, will join the panel of judges for the season finale of Shear Genius. Here’s an excerpt from Bravo’s press release:

The godfather of hair and styling industry giant, Vidal Sassoon, joins the finale judging panel to name the inaugural winner of Bravo’s Shear Genius on Wednesday, May 30 at 10 PM ET/PT.

The three remaining stylists, Anthony, the cool-headed stylist extraordinaire from across the pond; Daisy, the perky Miamian who has landed in the top two in almost every episode; and Ben, the rock and roll stylist out of Chicago, will face-off for the final and most challenging task yet.

Each competitor will be challenged with completing three styles that tell a distinct story – the ‘Nancy Kwan Bob,’ a precision cut made famous by Vidal Sassoon; a style with color; and they will have complete creative license on the last look.

The winner of Shear Genius will be awarded with $100,000 in seed money from Nexxus and a chance to style hair for an Allure magazine feature.

Ben Mollin, Shear Genius Hopeful, Profiled

Ben Mollin doesn’t look like a man who would know about hair.

First of all, he barely has any - he keeps his dark brown hair cut down in a low fade and often shaves himself bald or rocks a short Mohawk. His arms are covered with tattoos. And he prefers discussing his aspirations as a saxophone player to talking about asymmetrical cuts, shags and bobs.

tv-sheargenius-3-tb.jpg But from the day he French-braided a classmate’s hair at T.F. North High School, he’s known his path. “She was all super happy,” he recalled. “I thought, `I should do this for the rest of my life.’”

Mollin, 32, developed a cult of customers who followed him from salons to basements to his Calumet City, Ill., house, where he did hair for a while, and finally his new place: a small, hip-looking room in the back of a music instrument store.

He has gained a broader following now on the Bravo network reality show Shear Genius, which pits charismatic and sometimes melodramatic hairstylists against each other in weekly challenges. The winner of the competition has his or her work showcased in commercials and magazines and takes home $100,000 cash.

Mollin has been keeping his fans who watch the Wednesday-night episodes at the edge of their seats. Sometimes he’s among the top three stylists, but he’s also come close to being told “this is your last cut” and to pack his clippers and go home.

In the hair salon, Mollin enthralls clients with sagas of a free-spirited life. One moment, he’s playing a gig at a nightclub, the next he’s shooting a music video for a song with hard-core beats that’s simply about people needing haircuts. He raps:

Yeah I understand this is the biggest day in your life

You wanna bring in a picture …

You wanna look like the girl on TV

But I ain’t no witch doctor

I ain’t no magician

I’m a beautician, you know what I’m sayin’

“When I get home, it’s like telling the adventures of Ben,” said client Mary Lou Frederick, 57. “I’ve always got a story about what he’s up to. He’s always doing something, always evolving.”

Shear Genius Preview: Answering the Wedding Bells

A Hair-DON’T Teamwork is put to the test on Bravo’s Shear Genius tonight.

The remaining six stylists are divided into teams to complete in two strenuous challenges, as they hit up a local Los Angeles shopping mall for the shortcut challenge and solicit shoppers to become their newest clients.

In the elimination challenge, the stylists are under time constraints to create wedding day hairstyles for a bride, her mother and her maid of honor. Will it be “here comes the bride” or “here comes bridezilla,” when the wedding day do’s are done?

Additionally, Bravo announced the Shear Genius Reunion: Watch What Happens Special airing on Wednesday, May 23 at 11 PM ET/PT, hosted by Bravo’s Senior Vice President of Programming Production, Andy Cohen.

Viewers will get behind-the-scenes scoop, see reactions to the show and relive the drama as Jaclyn Smith, Sally Hershberger, Michael Carl and the 12 stylists come together once again.
