Laila Ali Wants Child to Be an Athlete

Laila Ali may have rose to (reality TV) fame thanks to Dancing with the Stars, but that doesn't mean she wants her impending child to be a dancer.

"I want him to be an athlete," Laila told OK!. "I did Dancing with the Stars, but my life doesn't revolve around it. I think that when I say athlete, I mean a serious athlete."

Ouch. That's quite the slam at professional dancers such as Mark Ballas, isn't it?

Perhaps Ali would prefer her offspring to end up on her current show, American Gladiators. Laila co-hosts the NBC revival of the 1990s series and can't dream up a more perfect gig for herself.

"It's a competitive show with a live audience that brings a lot of energy, and it's what I'm used to," she said. "It was perfect for me, and I'm having a really great time with [co-host] Hulk [Hogan]."

Hosts Speak on American Gladiators

Hulk Hogan and Laila Ali don't hold back when talking about the latest reincarnation of American Gladiators.

The former wrestling superstar, for starters, considers the show to be an American icon.

"I think it's going to be an interesting piece of programming in action TV. It's kind of like a McDonald's or Chevrolet or Babe Ruth or Hulk Hogan or Mohammed Ali - American Gladiators has been intertwined with American society for so long that to bring it back is something that makes sense," Hogan recently said.

"It's something that's a genius idea at this time; I think it's going to be something that people get addicted to. They've added more intensity to the events; there's water involved in a lot of the events and I think the one thing that really is going to make people get hooked on the show is the competition.

The contenders are normal people that came to the dance this time; they had to beat out thousands of people to get here."

American Gladiator Hosts

Ali echoed her co-host's sentiments, setting up the dichotomy of the program for viewers:

"It's real people going up against gladiators; I, for one, don't vouch for anyone I don't know. I don't care if they're male or female - may the best person win. I'm not one of those women who's like, 'Pro women;' I'm an individual, and I'm in an individual sport," Ali said.

"So I see everyone as individuals, not as male or female. And I usually tend to root for the competitors, not the gladiators, because they're the ones who are really here. They're not really competing against the gladiators, they're trying to get their points. I always try to remind them, 'Hey look, you're going up against each other. But you have to face the gladiator, though.

But in the end, you have to remember that you're trying to do better than your contestant is going to do."

American Gladiators premiered last night and will also air a new episode tonight.

Laila Ali to Co-Host American Gladiators

Laila Ali, third-place finisher in ABC's Dancing with the Stars last season and current undefeated World Super Middleweight Boxing Champion, will be entering a different kind of ring next year.

The female boxer will join Hulk Hogan as co-host of NBC's American Gladiators.

"It's an honor to be reintroducing this American classic to a new generation of fans," Ali said to People magazine.

Muhammad Ali to Cheer on Laila on Dancing with the Stars

Prepare for "The Greatest" audience member in the history of Dancing with the Stars, folks.

Former heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali plans to attend the hit ABC show to root for his daughter, Laila Ali, 29.

The Ali Family "He's a fan of the show and of my dancing," says Laila, who last week scored a perfect 30 thanks to a high-energy samba with partner Maxsim Chmerkovskiy. "I'm glad that he'll be able to come and take it all in."

Despite the added attention that will surround the visit, Laila has her eyes set on raking in more 10s for her waltz and jive this week.

"I don't look at him as everyone else does â€" as 'Muhammad Ali coming to the show!' It's just dad," she says. "I don't have time to really get caught up in any situation [except for] my training and getting prepared, because the last thing you want is to have everyone in the audience and go out there, mess it up and get bad scores."

But it wasn't Laila pop that got her onto the dance floor.

"My dad wasn't a big dancer," she told People magazine in March. Nevertheless, her father was excited when Laila told him she was entering the ballroom competition: "He said, 'Show me your moves!' and I showed him a few moves."

Ali â€" who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1983 â€" will be joined in the audience by his wife, Lonnie. Also in Laila's corner will be her regular cheering section: her fiancé, former NFL star Curtis Conway, and her mother, Veronica Porsche Anderson (who divorced Muhammad Ali in 1986) â€" along with Laila's older sister, Hana, and her grandmother.
