Featured American Idol Hopeful of the Day: Raquel Houghton

Raquel Houghton may soon become a household name.

The aspiring singer had her ticket for Hollywood punched on American Idol last night.

Among the tidbits we've learned about Houghton so far are:

  • She was a singer with The Valli Girls, an all-girl quintet that appeared on the 2005 Kid’s Choice Awards soundtrack;
  • She dated comedian Dane Cook for two years.

In fact, here's a shot of Houghton and Cook at the September 2006 premiere for his lousy movie, Employee of the Month:

American Idol Rundown: San Francisco Auditions

Excuse the pun, but San Francisco didn't yield very many treats during last night's American Idol auditions there.

Here's a round-up of the featured singers that were put through to the next round:

Tatiana Del Toro: 22, singer/actress from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Sang “Never Loved a Man” by Aretha Franklin. Way over the top, but judges put her through to Hollywood.

Jesus Valenzula: 29, fleet manager from North Highlands, CA. Sang “Nice and Slow” by Usher. Simon instantly said no, but he was overruled by the other three judges, which was a common theme on the evening.

Adam Lambert: 26, pictured, stage actor from Hollywood, CA. Sang “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen. Simon thought he was overly, theatrical but all four judges agreed he had potential.

Adam Lambert

John Twiford: 27, music teacher from Sherman Oaks, CA. Sang “Overjoyed” by Stevie Wonder. Nothing special, but good enough for a golden ticket.

Allison Iraheta: 16, high school student from Los Angeles. Sang “Natural Woman” by Aretha Franklin. Only showed a short clip, but apparently was good enough to move on.

Raquel Houghton: 23, waitress/bartender from Los Angeles, CA. Sang “Son of a Preacher Man” by Dusty Springfield. Very good. Off to Hollywood!

Kai Kalama: 26,  musician from San Clemente, CA. Sang “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” by the Platters. Not great, but story of how Kai takes care of his mother, who suffers from seizures, likely helped him advance to next round.

Brittaney Speaks on Rock of Love Bus Booting

Brittaney is not pleased.

The eliminated Rock of Love Bus contestant was asked by VH1 whether the show portrayed her fairly or not. Here's Brittaney's passionate response:

I feel I was portrayed completely wrong. I was probably the sweetest, nicest person on there. They took 48 hours and edited into 30 minutes and I looked like a crybaby racist. I’m far from that. I also was a little bummed out that they didn’t show the gift I gave to Bret [during the faux wedding] and instead made me look like a stalker.

Brittaney, Rock of Love Bus

It simply wasn't meant to be this season for Brittaney on Rock of Love Bus.

I donated $500 in Bret’s name to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. My father and sister both share that with Bret. They both have full-blown diabetes. I’m a hypoglycemic because of it. It really meant a lot to me, so I got misty eyed as I was giving the gift.

When I read the vows that I wrote, which were supposed to be to a man that I was in love with on my actual wedding day – they were not meant for Bret at that moment – I was still misty because of the gift that I gave him. It’s really unfortunate that they didn’t show that.

Not just to give me kudos, because I don’t want kudos for it. I want the charity to get exposure and more donations for its cause.

The City Recap: Boys Night Out!

When the hot, model girlfriends are away, the loser guys will party with random skanks until 8 a.m. Such is the case for Adam Senn, anyway.

Dude totally cheated on his girl and lied to her face about it.

All Whitney Port could do was stare very expressively and ponder whether her own man, Jay Lyon, would ever pull a similar stunt. Jay stayed mostly free of the drama, though he was a tad hung over. What else went down?

Brandi Cunningham Places Prank Phone Call

Hurry up, VH1. Give Brandi Cunningham a reality show, stat!

While Daisy De La Hoya and Megan Hauserman prepare to star in their own dating series, Brandi C. is relegated to making lame YouTube videos.

In the following clip, the I Love Money contestant phones former rival Rodeo and pretends as though she's from E!. It's truly hilarious stuff... not!

Monique Santiago Speaks on True Beauty Elimination

Monique Santiago was eliminated from True Beauty last night.

The contestant has an ill-timed body function and a disregard for the environment to blame for the ousting. Here's what she had to say about it to tabloid OK!

Did you ever have inkling there was more to the game?
I kind of did. Still, I had the best elimination so far because it didn't make me look that bad.

Monique Santiago

There was some serious tension between you and Chelsea. You threatened to get her kicked off.
It's bad they had to show the things that kind of off-putting about me. What they didn't show is Chelsea and I making amends and understanding each other and where we come from. It's frustrating when they say I didn't respect Chelsea.

Who do you think will win?
If I would pick someone it would be Ray or Billy. Billy is genuine all the way through and Ray is so funny and passionate and cares about people. They are just awesome guys.

American Idol Update: Surprise on the Way!

In case Katrina Darrell in a bikini and a contestant named Lil Rounds haven't been enough for you so far on season eight of American Idol, Fox reality chief Mike Darnell says a surprise is on the way.

"There's a big surprise coming when we get to the Top 12, but I can't reveal it right now," he told TV Week in an interview this weekend.  "It is something that will be talked about and is something I think that has some element of controversy surrounding it."

Darnell added that fans needn't be afraid, however. As Barack Obama has proven, change can be a good thing.

"It's not going to change what you think of American Idol and we don't want to do that. This show is, you know, a phenomenon. It's American, it's apple pie. We're not changing the core of the show."
